Information about using The Mystery of Love in the classroom
Most people think of romance when they think of love. Students are no different. Working in collaboration with the National Council of Teachers of English, The Mystery of Love project is pleased to offer curriculum materials designed to help students recognize the many forms of love that are part of life—in romance, friendship, familial love, community.
Materials for classroom use:
Sample Video Clip: The Love and Friendship segment from The Mystery of Love documentary tells the story of Camilla Williams and Boris Bazala. This compelling story of a platonic relationship that crosses many boundaries is bound to engage viewers and provide multiple entry points for classroom dialogue. (See more video clips)
Lesson Gallery: Lesson plans for grades 9-12 developed by ReadWriteThink, a nonprofit MarcoPolo Web site maintained by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), the International Reading Association (IRA) and with support from the Verizon Foundation.
The Mystery of Love Teaching Guide (PDF): This guide details three ways to use The Mystery of Love in your classroom. Part One recommends clips from the documentary that you can use to practice reading skills. Part Two suggests clips that might work well for you to practice specific writing skills. Part Three includes previewing activities, summaries of each of three viewing days, discussion questions, and post-viewing activities.
Reading Nonfiction Text: This kit, from the National Council of Teachers of English, offers strategies for helping students read, view, and interpret nonfiction texts and documentaries. The kit features the book Reading in the Reel World: Teaching Documentaries and Other Nonfiction Texts, the Mystery of Love DVD and teaching guide, selected NCTE journal articles, Guidelines for Study Groups, and a Notebook for Writers.
