The spirit of altruism moves a community in concern for abused children

BACA (Bikers Against Child Abuse) is a nation-wide organization of motorcyclists that works closely with local authorities to give love and protection to victims of child abuse. Many of the bikers were themselves abused children.

BACA “adopts” a child in a ceremony that involves a dramatic parade of motorcycles, an affectionate initiation, a teddy bear and lots of warm hugs.

One adoptee nicknamed “Daredevil,” a 13-year-old girl, was rescued from drugs and sexual abuse. Her life was spiraling out of control until she found community, caring and loving-kindness through the altruistic efforts of this unique organization. BACA provides a large and protective second family for her and other children in abusive situations.

A choral group as a communal heart

Conspirare is a vocal group based in Austin, Texas. The name Conspirare means to breathe together. The group, made up of soloists from all over the country, and its leader, Craig Hella Johnson, are exemplars of how individuals can subordinate their own ego to achieve a goal that cannot be realized alone — in this case, reviving rare and precious choral music.

Conspirare combines classic and contemporary works to lead the audience on a journey of innovative sound, colorful images and thought-provoking literature. The group tours nationally, and has performed at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York

Conspirare demonstrates the principle that a “communal heart” can and does develop in many settings in life, within any group that is working together to achieve a common creative goal – in a team sport, a business enterprise, even in war.
